The strongly basic, nonhemolytic compound is the first vertebrate peptide that shows highly potent antimicrobial activity against pathogenic fungi at micromolar concentration. With a potentially amphiphatic α-helix structure, dermaseptin probably acts by membrane permeabilization. |
