Recent advances in high-resolution sequencing have led to the discovery of unique peptides extracted from the mitochondrial genome. 1-2 At present, 8 peptides have been identified: human hormone, mitochondrial 12S-tRNA-c open reading frame (MOTS-c) and 6 small human hormone-like peptides (SHLP1-6). 1-2 All these peptides are released from the mitochondria into the cytoplasm. SHLP4 can promote the proliferation of certain cells and participate in reducing apoptosis.
